Project description

The general objective of this project is to develop integrated models of aggregate planning (PA) and determine the corresponding resolution procedures so that the PA can be an adequate instrument to foresee, in the medium term, the activities of the main functional areas of the company and to ensure their coordination, thus improving efficiency and overall benefits.

The proposal is based on the consideration that the aggregate planning models proposed in textbooks and scientific literature are much less useful than they should and could be in reality. In particular, they are not conceived as an instrument of integral planning of the areas of the company; on the contrary, the majority conceives the PA as a phase in the planning, programming and control of operations, focusing almost exclusively on productive aspects (they consider demand as a fact and the evolution, for example, of the workforce and treasury or purchase planning as results).

On the other hand, the level of aggregation of products, activities and time periods that is usually proposed is excessive for many applications and unnecessary, given the means of calculation currently available so they can be improved. They ignore the environmental impact of the company's activity and the possibility or presence of reverse logistics. Finally, with exceptions, they usually consider the input parameters deterministically and independently of other decisions.

In particular, the functional areas (and the type of decisions) that it is proposed to integrate are the following:

  1. Operations (quantities to be produced, with capacities / hour that may have a non-linear dependence on the size of the template and with the possibility of remanufacturing).
  2. Staff (hiring and firing, taking into account learning periods, and organization of working time with the possibility of flexible systems).
  3. Commercial (price of products and promotional expenses, with demand dependent on them).
  4. Procurement (order planning in a multi-vendor environment).
  5. Accounting and Finance (management of collections, payments, financing needs and the placement of surpluses and investments in capacity in the short or medium term).
